XLCR Eagles on the Cusp of Making History

Welcome to Champs 2024 as your XLCR Eagles attempt to make history....

Excelsior has a great legacy in local high school athletics, and indeed in sports in general. This stems from the inception of the school and the vision that founder, Hon A. Wesley Powell had for his school. He saw the benefits to both individual students as well as to the school in participating in various extra curricular activities such as sports including track and field athletics.

Under his leadership Excelsior achieved many firsts in local high school athletics:

  1. The first coed school to enter what was then Boys Champs  - 1952

  2. The first coed school to win boys Champs - 1960

  3. The first School to win both Boys & Girls Champs - 1960 & 1970

  4. The first school to win Girls Champs 4 consecutive years - 1970 to 1973

  5. The second Jamaican high school to win a Penn Relay Championship of America Title - 1967

During this golden era of Excelsior athletics the school produced many great sprinters, winning 6 Champs Boys Class 1 sprint relay titles between 1959 and 1969. However the “Age Men” as they were then known have only produced 2 athletes to win the short sprint at Champs - Noel Mitchell (1960 & ’61) and Canute Godfrey (1972). While the Boys from Antrim have never won the Class 2 title.

In exactly 7 days time the finals of the Blue riband event, the 100 metres will take place at Champs - Champs Thursday to be precise. This season The XLCR Eagles has some of the finest sprinters in the land and certainly the best short sprint squad at XLCR in 8 years, resulting in the school being ranked no. 2 in the Class 1 Boys 4x100mR and No. 1 in the Class 2 equivalent, on the JAAA/ISSA Qualifying Trials Ranking list.

Today we present three of Eagles sprinters that are expected feature at Champs 2024:
